A graduate in Mechanical Engineering from Pune University in 1965 and a Fellow of Indian Institute of Industrial Engineering, J. M. Thatte acquired Fellowship in Production Engineering and was elected Member of the Institution of Production Engineers, London.

He worked with Tata Motors from 1970 to 2008 and retired as Vice President, in charge of Indica Car Plant in 2004 but continued in the capacity of Consultant Adviser in the Pune Car Plant.
